Minerals
Plants need at least 14 mineral elements to grow, including macronutrients and micronutrients.
1. Macronutrients: Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S).
2. Micronutrients: Chlorine (Cl), boron (B), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo).
The three main nutrients for plant growth are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are known as NPK. Other important nutrients include calcium, magnesium, and sulfur.
Here are some functions of these nutrients:
1. Nitrogen: Promotes green, leafy growth.
2. Phosphorus: Essential for energy transformations in the plant.
3. Potassium: Essential for photosynthesis, respiration, water movement, and regulation of cell turgidity.
4. Calcium: Stimulates root and leaf development.
5. Magnesium: Part of the chlorophyll molecule, so it is actively involved in photosynthesis.
6. Boron: Critical for cell wall structure and function in the plant.
Some nutrients are supplied by soil, water and air, while others need to be supplemented with fertilizer. Plants that lack one of these elements may experience growth abnormalities, deficiency symptoms, or abnormal reproduction.
Humic Acid
Humic acid is a natural plant growth regulator that can improve plant development at almost every stage of growth. It can help with:
1. Soil Structure: Humic acid binds to soil particles to improve soil structure, which can promote healthy root growth in compacted and high-clay soil. It can also bind loose low-clay soil particles to improve water retention.
2. Seed Germination: Humic acid can stimulate seed germination and seedling growth.
3. Root Development: Humic acid can promote healthy root growth in compacted and high-clay soil.
4. Nutrient Uptake: Plants grown in soils with high levels of humic acid tend to absorb more nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which can lead to healthier plants with better yields.
5. Microbial Growth: Humic acid provides a carbon source for microbes, which encourages their growth and activity. Soil microbes help solubilize nutrients like phosphorus, which humic acid can then absorb and make available to the plant.
6. Hormonal Balance: Humic acid can enhance plant enzyme activity and hormonal balance, which can promote healthy plant growth.
Humic acid is also found in organic liquid fertilizers, which contain seaweed extract. Seaweed extract doesn't provide nutrients, but it does contain humic acid, which is important for thickening plant cell walls.
Seaweed Extract
Seaweed extracts are a type of biostimulant that can help plants grow better, have higher yields, and resist stress. They are rich in plant growth-promoting factors like vitamins, organic matter, and microelements. Seaweed extracts contain natural hormones, such as auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, and abscisic acid, as well as other active substances like seaweed polysaccharide, sugar alcohol, betaine, and phenolic compounds.
Here are some benefits of seaweed extracts for plant growth:
1. Seed germination: Soaking seeds in liquid seaweed before planting can improve seed germination, root growth, and early seedling vigor.
2. Root growth: Seaweed extracts can boost root growth.
3. Leaf chlorophyll: Seaweed extracts can increase leaf chlorophyll.
4. Crop performance: Seaweed extracts can improve crop performance and yield of tomato.
5. Stress resistance: Seaweed extracts can help plants resist biotic and abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, and cold.
Seaweed extracts can also affect the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil. For example, they can combine soil metal ions to produce colloids and protect the soil aggregate structure.
